Studies Find That There’s a Link Between a Cluttered Home and Depression

If you’re at home right now, take a moment to look around you. What do you see? Do you see a tidy home in which everything (well, practically everything!) is in its right place, or do you see total chaos and disorganization? If it’s the latter, don’t feel bad, it happens to the best of us every once and a while–but, if this is a very common occurrence in your life, there might be something more serious going on. A series of studies used in the writing of the book  Life at Home in the 21st Century: 32 Families Open Their Doors , show that people, especially women, living in cluttered homes experience heightened levels of stress hormones, the same kind that contributes to depression. This experience was outlined in psychiatrist  Dr. Audrey Sherman’s “Dysfunction Interrupted” column on PsychCentral . In it, Dr. Sherman reveals that she finds disorganization and the chaos that comes with it to be “the biggest problems to be reported by depressed in...

Daughters Who Were Nagged By Their Mothers Are More Successful Says Science

Study shows that daughters of nagging moms may be more successful Good news, mothers of daughters! It looks like we may be able to use our daughters’ need to prove us wrong about everything to our advantage. A study from the University of Essex showed that girls who have mothers who “nag” them (a phrase we hate because a nag is a broken-down old horse and we are just trying to help, Goddammit) were more likely to go to college, get better-paying jobs, and avoid teen pregnancy than those with mothers who were more relaxed. The study looked at the lives of over 15,000 13 and 14-year-old teenage girls for six years. Results concluded that young ladies who had a main parent (usually the mother) that stayed on top of them about chores, school, and responsibilities were more likely to go to college and have high paying jobs. They were also less likely to become pregnant as teens. The “nagging” doesn’t necessarily come in the form that you think but has more to do with setting con...

All across the globe, people are jumping onto the trend of smaller “shoebox” living. Scaling back and and living a more sustainable lifestyle is made possible with compact, repurposed and/or off-the-grid living quarters. Following in the steps of the sustainable living movement, one housing developer purchased the Providence Arcade — a bankrupted and abandoned mall, which also happens to be the oldest mall in America. The now National Historic Landmark was built in 1828 and was the first indoor shopping mall in the United States. Developer Evan Granoff bought the Providence Arcade in 2005. By turning the upper-level retail spaces into micro apartments with businesses and the original sun-flooded atrium on the first level, Granoff believed he could restore the building to its former glory — and that’s exactly what he did. Even though the Arcade’s smallest apartments are just 225 square feet, all of the residents speak highly of their compact and sustainable li...
