According To Science, There’s No Such Thing As Holding Your Baby Too Much

There is always someone whether it is a relative or a friend who says holding the baby too much is not good, too much holding can spoil the baby or make them too dependable.  This is not nice to hear especially when it is your first time as a mother and you have no idea of what you are doing!

According to a study holding a baby can be very beneficial for their overall health.  It is actually vital for the baby´s well being in his/her first days of life, the way a mother treats her child can have a big impact on the child´s health and development.

The research was conducted at Nationwide Children´s Hospital in Ohio, and it was centered on 125 premature babies and full-term babies. The goal of the study was to see how babies responded to touch. Premature babies were less likely to respond to gentle touching than full-time infants.

Researchers also found that preemies who received more snuggles from parents or nurses at the NICU responded more to that gentle touching than babies who were held or touched less frequently. The increased responsiveness demonstrates that holding a baby like rocking and skin-to-skin contact helps with brain development.

“Making sure that preterm babies receive positive, supportive touch such as skin-to-skin care by parents is essential to help their brains respond to gentle touch in ways similar to those of babies who experienced an entire pregnancy inside their mother’s womb” “Touch is one of the first senses that develops, before hearing or sight, therefore making it the building block in early infancy of communication” said Dr. Nathalie Maitre the lead researcher.

It is very important to raise awareness about the benefits of this practice; hospitals should encourage their stuff at the NICU to provide special care for babies also known as “Kangaroo care”.

It actually makes sense that holding a baby as much as you can is good for the child, we, humans are animals that need to be touched, we need skin-to-skin contact. Think about hugs, for instance, it is so nice to receive a hug, you feel good, you feel understood and protected.

So remember, don´t put the baby down! Hold him, caress him and transmit your love, babies can feel all of it. Holding a baby is very important to ensure a good development, it has only positive effects and it also good to encourage mother/father and child connection.

What do you think about this?
